Why King James? The Case for the Most Faithful English Bible Translation

For centuries, scholars have labored to perfect the English translation of Scripture. Yet many believe the art of Bible translation reached its pinnacle when King James I of England commissioned what would become one of the most significant literary and spiritual achievements in history — the King James Bible.

While countless translations have since attempted to put Scripture into modern words through paraphrasing, additions, or subtractions, the King James Version stands apart as the most faithful, accurate, and literal English translation — drawn from the highest-quality Greek, Latin, and Hebrew manuscripts available.

Rooted in the Original Texts

The most widely read English Bible of King James's era — the Geneva Bible — was heavily influenced by the political bias of religious reformers. King James I set out to create something different: a translation free from commentary or political agenda, one that any English-speaking person could read at home or in church. He succeeded. Today, over half of Bible-reading Americans still turn to the King James Version.

Where many modern translations prioritize readability by going "thought for thought," the King James Bible goes word for word — choosing the most accurate language of its time to reflect the exact meaning of the original texts. King James assembled multiple teams of scholars fluent in the original languages, ensuring that every word carried its full, intended weight. For transparency, any words added for clarity are printed in italics. Even a single word substitution can alter meaning profoundly — as seen when the Revised Standard Version replaced "virgin" with "young woman" in Isaiah 7:14.

Unchanged Since 1611

The King James Bible has remained essentially the same for over 400 years. The only revisions made since its original publication have been corrections of printing errors and minor spelling updates — never changes to meaning or context. In a world of constantly revised and updated translations, the King James Version offers something rare: stability, consistency, and trustworthiness across generations.

Scholarly Excellence

King James I enlisted more than 40 Bible scholars and translators, organized into six committees, each responsible for significant portions of Scripture. The translation is grounded in the Textus Receptus — the Greek New Testament published by the renowned Dutch scholar Erasmus. Many modern translations instead rely on manuscripts compiled by Westcott and Hort in 1881, scholars who approached the Bible as ordinary literature and favored heavily edited older manuscripts over more accurate ones.

No Paraphrasing — Ever

Paraphrasing Scripture and presenting it as the Word of God is, at its core, substituting human words for God's. Translations like The Living Bible are well-known for this practice — producing a longer, wordier text that may feel accessible but loses the precision and power of the original. The King James Bible never paraphrases. What you read is as close to the original Word as the English language allows.

Not Driven by Trends or Profit

When the King James Bible was first published, there was no universally accessible English Bible. Today there are more translations than anyone can count — many published not for spiritual enrichment, but for commercial gain. Some rely on manuscripts that have never been thoroughly vetted by serious theologians. The King James Bible was never created for profit. It was created for the people — and it has served them faithfully ever since.

A Universal Standard

Though the King James Bible exists only in English, its commitment to literal translation makes it the natural English counterpart in bilingual Bibles worldwide. Languages seeking the most faithful equivalent to their own literal translations consistently turn to the King James Version as their English parallel — including the Reina-Valera-Gomez (RVG) Spanish Bible of 2010, widely considered the closest Spanish equivalent to the KJV.

Your Reason Is Valid

Whether the King James Bible has been your family's Bible for generations, or you are drawn to the beauty and precision of its language, your reasons for choosing it are your own — and they are enough. At Kinsman & Company, every product we create is rooted in King James scripture because we believe His Word deserves to be carried, displayed, and gifted with the same care and reverence with which it was written.
