The Sacred Role of Mothers in the Church: From Scripture to Today

From the very beginning, women have been at the heart of the church. Long before pews were filled and hymns were sung, women of faith were kneeling in prayer, carrying the Word, and nurturing the next generation in the ways of the Lord. Their role was not incidental — it was essential. And it began at the very moment the world changed forever.

Women Were There First

When Jesus rose from the dead, it was the women who came first to the tomb. “And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.”Matthew 28:8 (KJV)

It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women who carried the greatest news in human history. Jesus did not appear first to the disciples — He appeared first to a woman. That was not an accident. From the very dawn of the resurrection, women were called to carry the gospel forward.

Mothers Who Shaped the Faith

Throughout scripture, mothers played a defining role in passing the faith from one generation to the next. Consider Eunice and Lois — Timothy’s mother and grandmother — who instilled in him a sincere and unshakeable faith from his earliest days. The Apostle Paul himself honored them, writing, “When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice.”2 Timothy 1:5 (KJV)

Then there was Hannah, who wept and prayed fervently for a son, and when God answered, she dedicated that child — Samuel — back to the Lord before he had even taken his first steps in the temple. And Mary, the mother of Jesus, who said yes to God’s call without fully understanding what it would cost her, and who raised the Savior of the world with love, wisdom, and unwavering devotion.

These were not passive women. They were women of prayer, of courage, and of deep, unshakeable faith. They shaped the men and women who shaped the world.

The Women of Your Church Today

The women sitting in your congregation on Sunday morning carry on this same legacy. They are the ones who arrive early to set up the fellowship hall, who stay late to pray with someone who is hurting, who teach the children’s Sunday school class with joy and patience, and who quietly intercede for their families in the early hours of the morning when no one else is watching.

They lead women’s Bible studies, organize outreach, bring meals to the sick, and show up — faithfully, consistently, sacrificially. They are the backbone of the local church, just as women of faith have always been.

This Mother’s Day, we want to help your church honor them in a way that speaks to their hearts — with a gift rooted in the Word they love.
