A Meaningful Christian Gift Speaks to the Heart
Every gift is special. I love and appreciate every kind of gift that someone takes the time to give me. But to me, a Christian gift carries a deeper meaning. It speaks to the root of who I am.
When someone gives me a gift centered around the Lord or His Word, it tells me that person really knows me. They know that I love the Lord Jesus Christ. He is my center, my focus, and my world.
That is one of the things that makes a meaningful Christian gift different. It isn’t necessarily about how much the gift costs or how impressive it looks. It is about the message behind it. A meaningful Christian gift can say: I know what is important to you. I care about your walk with the Lord. I want to encourage you. I am praying for you. I want God’s Word to be part of your everyday life.
And sometimes, a Christian gift becomes part of someone’s testimony. I know because that happened to me.
The Christian Gift I Have Treasured Since I Was 16
When I was around 16 years old, a young man began asking me out. He also invited me to attend church with him. He took me to a church that believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and taught that a person must be born again to go to Heaven. Over a short period of time, I continued going to church with him while we were dating. And one day, I got saved.
After I was saved, this young man gave me my very first King James Bible. It was beautiful — burgundy, with my name written on it in gold lettering. He signed the front of it and gave me a Scripture that has remained precious to me:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (KJV)
I still have that Bible today. I wrote in it. I highlighted almost every Scripture and passage. I dated things and wrote down who was preaching when I heard particular messages and learned truths from God’s Word. That Bible became much more than an object sitting on a shelf. It became part of my walk with God.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a Bible case for it at the time. It deteriorated quickly through years of use, and today it isn’t in very good condition. I wish I had been able to protect it better because it means so much to me. But even though the Bible itself has grown worn with age, what it represents has never worn away. That is what a meaningful Christian gift can do.
Meaningful Christian Gifts Don’t Have to Be Expensive
We live in a very materialistic world. There is always something newer, bigger, or more expensive that we are told we need. But when I think about meaningful gift-giving, I don’t believe the value of a gift is determined by its price tag. I believe we should give gifts that are purposeful and useful.
A Christian gift can be something a person uses in everyday life while also reminding them of God’s Word. It might be a Bible or Bible case. It could be a tumbler or coffee cup with Scripture. It might be a notebook, pen, card, journal, or another useful item that puts an encouraging verse in front of someone throughout the day. The physical object may not last forever. But the Scripture can. The sentiment can. The memory of being loved and encouraged can. That is what makes these gifts different.
God’s Word Is the Most Important Part of the Gift
When I give gifts today, I love giving things that have beautiful, encouraging Scriptures on them. I give them to church members, friends, family members, and even people who are not Christians. Why? Because I want God’s Word in front of them.
For example, someone may receive a beautiful tumbler because they like the design or the colorful flowers. They may use that tumbler every day because it is practical and useful. But there is something much more important on that tumbler: Scripture. Every time that person picks it up, God’s Word is in front of them. I don’t have to force a conversation. I can simply give them something beautiful and useful and allow God to use His Word to speak to their heart. That is one of the purposes behind Kinsman & Company.
Why I Started Kinsman & Company
One of the reasons Kinsman & Company came about was because I discovered how difficult it was to find products using the King James Version of the Bible. And when I did find some Scripture products, I wasn’t always satisfied with the quality. I wanted both — beautiful, quality-made products that carried the King James Scripture I love.
But there is an even deeper purpose behind what we do. I pray over each order. I pray that the recipient will feel the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that His Word will come alive and become effectual in their life. I pray that the Scripture will give them encouragement and hope. And I pray that when they receive the gift, they will know that they are loved. For me, that is what Christian gift-giving is about.
A Christian Gift Can Encourage Someone for Years
“I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” — Acts 20:35 (KJV)
As children, we may not fully understand that. But as we grow older, we begin to understand that our lives are about much more than what we can do for ourselves. We begin to see the joy in what we can do for others. People are often deeply touched by the care and compassion they receive. Sometimes it is a kind word. Sometimes it is a card. And sometimes it is a thoughtful gift carrying an encouraging Scripture. You may not even realize how much that act of kindness meant to someone. Years later, they may still remember it.
Choose Gifts That Help Someone Grow in the Lord
If someone asked me how to choose a meaningful Christian gift, I would encourage them to think beyond simply buying another possession. Ask yourself: Is this something the person can actually use? Is there a Scripture that would particularly encourage them? Could this gift remind them of God’s promises? Could it encourage them to read their Bible or spend time in prayer?
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” — 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV)
A meaningful Christian gift can be one small way of encouraging someone in that growth.
Don’t Forget Those Who Don’t Yet Know Christ
I believe it is especially important to give Scripture gifts to people who aren’t believers. A person may be attracted to a gift simply because it is beautiful — the flowers, the colors, the design. But what matters most is the Scripture. God’s Word is now in front of them. We don’t know how God may use one verse placed before someone at just the right time. Romans 2:4 reminds us that it is “the goodness of God” that leads to repentance. We can show kindness, give generously, love people, and place God’s Word before them — and then allow the Lord to work in their hearts.
The Most Meaningful Christian Gift Has a Purpose Beyond the Present
Time is short, and I believe the Lord is coming back soon. As Christians, we must be about our Father’s business. Jesus said: “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” — John 9:4 (KJV)
We can pass out Gospel tracts. We can invite people to church. We can share the Gospel. We can encourage the hurting. We can give cards. We can speak kind words. We can show the love of Christ through our actions. And yes, we can give meaningful Christian gifts. Spread the Word of God every way you can — through gifts, through cards, through speech, and through action.
A beautiful gift may eventually wear out. My first burgundy Bible certainly did. But decades later, I still remember the young man who gave it to me, the gold lettering with my name on the cover, the Scripture he wrote inside, and the Word of God that became a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. That is a meaningful Christian gift. It isn’t merely something you give someone. It is something that can leave God’s Word in their heart for a lifetime.
