The good news? You do not have to earn it. You simply have to ask.
What Is Wisdom?
Biblical wisdom is not the same as worldly intelligence or human cleverness. Wisdom, in the King James Bible, is the God-given ability to see life from His perspective and to apply His truth to every situation.
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."
— Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
What Is Discernment?
Discernment is wisdom in action. It is the spiritual ability to distinguish between truth and error, between what is of God and what is not.
"And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ."
— Philippians 1:9–10 (KJV)
God's Promise: Ask and He Will Give It
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."
— James 1:5 (KJV)
He gives liberally — He does not give sparingly or reluctantly. He upbraideth not — He does not shame you for asking. He simply gives.
Solomon's Example: Asking God for Wisdom
"Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad."
— 1 Kings 3:9 (KJV)
When we seek wisdom above all else, God honors that desire.
Scriptures to Pray When Asking God for Wisdom
For wisdom in decisions:
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
For a heart that understands:
"The LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding." — Proverbs 2:6 (KJV)
For spiritual understanding:
"For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding." — Colossians 1:9 (KJV)
Writing these scriptures out by hand in a Spiritual Growth Journal is a powerful way to hide God's Word in your heart and track your growth in wisdom over time.
How to Pray for Wisdom
- Come humbly. Acknowledge that you need His wisdom, not your own.
- Ask specifically. Tell God exactly what decision or situation you need wisdom for.
- Ask in faith. "But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering." — James 1:6 (KJV)
- Wait and listen. Wisdom often comes through Scripture, godly counsel, or peace in your spirit.
- Obey what He shows you. Wisdom is not just received — it is walked out.
Wisdom Is a Daily Gift
"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."
— Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
God is faithful. He has promised to give wisdom to those who ask. Come to Him today — and trust that He will answer.
