There is a gift that God promises to give freely to every believer who asks — and that gift is wisdom. In a world full of noise, confusion, and competing voices, the ability to see clearly, choose rightly, and walk in discernment is one of the most precious things a Christian woman can possess. The good news? You do not have to earn it. You simply have to ask.
What Is Wisdom?
Biblical wisdom is not the same as worldly intelligence or human cleverness. Wisdom, in the King James Bible, is the God-given ability to see life from His perspective and to apply His truth to every situation. It is the difference between knowing what is right and knowing why it is right — and having the courage and clarity to act on it.
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."
— Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
Wisdom begins with reverence for God. It is not something we manufacture on our own — it flows from a heart that is surrendered to Him.
What Is Discernment?
Discernment is wisdom in action. It is the spiritual ability to distinguish between truth and error, between what is of God and what is not. Discernment protects us from deception, guides our decisions, and helps us recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit above all other voices.
"And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ."
— Philippians 1:9–10 (KJV)
God's Promise: Ask and He Will Give It
Perhaps the most encouraging promise in all of Scripture on this subject is found in the book of James. God does not make wisdom difficult to obtain. He makes it available to every believer who comes to Him in faith.
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."
— James 1:5 (KJV)
Notice what this verse tells us about God's character:
- He gives to all — wisdom is not reserved for pastors, scholars, or the spiritually elite. It is for every believer.
- He gives liberally — He does not give sparingly or reluctantly. He pours it out generously.
- He upbraideth not — He does not scold you for not knowing. He does not shame you for asking. He simply gives.
What a gracious God we serve. One beautiful way to respond to this promise is to begin keeping a Ladies Daily Prayer Journal — a dedicated space to bring your requests before the Lord and record how He answers.
Solomon's Example: Asking God for Wisdom
One of the most powerful examples of asking God for wisdom is found in the life of King Solomon. When God appeared to Solomon and said, "Ask what I shall give thee," Solomon did not ask for riches, long life, or power over his enemies. He asked for wisdom to lead God's people well.
"Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?"
— 1 Kings 3:9 (KJV)
God was so pleased with this request that He gave Solomon not only wisdom, but also the riches and honor he had not asked for. When we seek wisdom above all else, God honors that desire.
Scriptures to Pray When Asking God for Wisdom
Here are King James scriptures you can pray over your own life as you seek God's wisdom and discernment:
For wisdom in decisions:
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
— Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
For a heart that understands:
"The LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding."
— Proverbs 2:6 (KJV)
For discernment between good and evil:
"But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."
— Hebrews 5:14 (KJV)
For the mind of Christ:
"For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."
— 1 Corinthians 2:16 (KJV)
For spiritual understanding:
"For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding."
— Colossians 1:9 (KJV)
Writing these scriptures out by hand in a Spiritual Growth Journal is a powerful way to hide God's Word in your heart and track your growth in wisdom over time.
How to Pray for Wisdom
Praying for wisdom is not complicated. God is not looking for eloquent words — He is looking for a sincere heart. Here is a simple framework for your prayer:
- Come humbly. Acknowledge that you need His wisdom, not your own. "LORD, I do not have the understanding I need for this situation. I come to You."
- Ask specifically. Tell God exactly what decision, relationship, or situation you need wisdom for. He already knows, but bringing it before Him in prayer aligns your heart with His.
- Ask in faith. James 1:6 tells us to ask in faith, nothing wavering. Believe that God will answer. "But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering." — James 1:6 (KJV)
- Wait and listen. Wisdom often comes through Scripture, through the counsel of godly people, through peace in your spirit, or through circumstances that God orders. Be still and pay attention.
- Obey what He shows you. Wisdom is not just received — it is walked out. When God gives you clarity, act on it.
Wisdom Is a Daily Gift
Praying for wisdom is not a one-time event. It is a daily practice. Each morning, before the demands of the day crowd in, you can open your King James Bible, bring your heart before the Lord, and ask Him to lead you in wisdom and discernment for that day.
"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."
— Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
God is faithful. He has promised to give wisdom to those who ask. Come to Him today — and trust that He will answer.
