The Bible record of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1–11 (KJV) is one of the most sobering passages in all of Scripture. It is about money, yes — but more than that, it is a record about truth, integrity, and the holiness of God.
The Story
In the early days of the church, believers were selling their possessions and laying the proceeds at the apostles' feet to support the body of Christ. Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a piece of land — but together they secretly agreed to keep back part of the price for themselves while pretending to give the full amount.
Ananias came before Peter first. Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, confronted him directly:
"Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?" — Acts 5:3 (KJV)
Ananias fell down and died on the spot. Then, three hours later, Sapphira came in — not knowing what had happened to her husband. Peter gave her the opportunity to tell the truth. She confirmed the lie. And she too fell down and died. Great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.
The Lesson: Half-Truths Are Still Lies
It would be easy to read this story and focus only on the dramatic judgment. But the deeper lesson is this — Ananias and Sapphira did not have to give everything. Peter made that clear: "Whiles it remained, was it not thine own?" (Acts 5:4 KJV). Their sin was not in keeping part of the money. Their sin was in lying about it — in presenting a half-truth as the whole truth.
A half-truth is a whole lie. And when we tell half-truths, we are not just deceiving people around us — we are lying to the God who sees all things.
God Is Truth
"God is not a man, that he should lie" — Numbers 23:19 (KJV)
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" — John 17:17 (KJV)
Because God is truth in His very nature, He cannot tolerate deception — not white lies, not half-truths, not convenient omissions. He calls us to walk in the light, to let our yes be yes and our no be no.
A Word for Our Hearts
In our Sunday school class this week, we were reminded that the standard God holds us to is not the world's standard — it is His. Let us be a people of truth — in our words, in our giving, in our hearts — because we serve a God who is Truth itself.
