Can Prayer Journaling Really Reduce My Anxiety?

If someone asked me, "Can prayer journaling really reduce my anxiety?" my answer would be a heartfelt yes.

Not because writing in a journal magically makes life's problems disappear, but because prayer journaling creates intentional time to meet with the One who carries our burdens.

I've always been the type of person who worries. Even as a Christian, I found myself carrying stress, overthinking situations, and holding everything inside because I didn't want to burden anyone else with my problems. From the outside, everything looked fine. Inside, however, I was carrying far more than I was ever meant to carry.

Everything began to change when I started writing my prayers.

Prayer Journaling Helped Me Release What I Was Holding Inside

When I first began prayer journaling, I didn't have a special method or routine. I simply started writing to God as though I were talking to Him face to face.

Something remarkable happened.

As I wrote my thoughts on paper, they became easier to understand. Instead of racing through my mind over and over again, I was able to slow down, think through them, and honestly give them to the Lord.

Many times, I have cried while writing.

Those tears became prayers.

As I poured my heart onto the pages, I noticed something else happening. The tension I carried in my neck and shoulders began to release. The physical stress I had been holding onto slowly eased as I surrendered my burdens to God.

There is something deeply healing about honestly telling the Lord exactly how you feel.

Prayer Is More Than Writing

Prayer journaling isn't simply writing your thoughts in a notebook.

It is prayer.

When I write, I write exactly as I would pray. I tell God what is worrying me. I tell Him where I'm struggling. I thank Him for His blessings. I ask Him for wisdom. I ask Him for strength.

I simply talk to Him.

I believe we often make prayer more complicated than it needs to be.

God already knows our hearts.

He simply wants us to come to Him.

Treat Him as a friend who is sitting right there with you because He is.

He is a loving Father who cares about every detail of your life. He wants to hear from His children just as we enjoy hearing from our own children.

We Speak to God Through Prayer, but He Speaks to Us Through His Word

One truth has become incredibly important in my own walk with God.

We speak to God through prayer, but He speaks to us through His Holy Word.

That is why I never separate prayer journaling from Bible reading.

God's Word is alive.

People often ask me if there is one Bible passage that helps with anxiety. The truth is, I have many favorite passages, but I have learned that God can use any portion of His Word to meet our greatest need. Think about sitting in church. A pastor preaches one message, yet somehow every person in the congregation walks away feeling like God spoke directly to them.

The same thing happens when we open our Bibles.

God faithfully speaks through His Word, encouraging us, correcting us, comforting us, and reminding us that we are never alone.

Sometimes We Lay Our Burdens Down… Then Pick Them Back Up

One of the greatest blessings of prayer journaling is being able to look back.

There have been many times when I wrote out my fears, prayed sincerely, and completely surrendered them to the Lord.

Then, a few weeks later, I realized I had quietly picked those same burdens back up.

When I reread my journal entries, I'm reminded that I already placed those worries into God's hands.

Reading previous prayers helps me surrender them again.

It reminds me that God was faithful then, and He will be faithful now.

Sometimes we simply need to remember what God has already done.

Why I Created My Walk with God

For years I searched for a prayer journal that included everything I wanted.

Every journal seemed to be missing something important. Some didn't have enough space to write. Others didn't include Bible reading. Some focused only on gratitude. Others didn't leave room to reflect on answered prayers.

For nearly ten years, I kept thinking about what my ideal journal would look like. Eventually, I decided to create it.

The My Walk with God Two-Year Reflection Journal was designed to help believers grow intentionally in every area of their walk with Christ. Inside you'll find:

  • A one-year Bible reading plan
  • Prayer pages with room to record requests
  • Weekly gratitude pages
  • A "Purposeful Heart of Service" section where you intentionally plan three ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus each week
  • Weekly evaluations that encourage faithfulness in prayer, Bible reading, service, and attitude
  • Reflection pages for recording answered prayers
  • Side-by-side journaling that allows you to compare this year's journey with last year's

Everything is together in one place. That was important to me because life is busy.

Gratitude Changed More Than I Expected

I have always considered myself to be a grateful person.

Then I challenged myself to write down five different blessings every week.

Some weeks that wasn't easy. I had to stop and really think. What had God done for me this week? How had He protected me? Where had I seen His goodness?

That simple habit changed my perspective. Instead of focusing on what was wrong, I began noticing all the ways God was working.

I truly believe gratitude is one of God's greatest gifts for anxious hearts. The more we notice His faithfulness, the more our trust in Him grows.

Prayer Became More Intentional

Another unexpected blessing was becoming more faithful in praying for others.

When someone asked me to pray for them, I wrote it down. Because it was written in my journal, I remembered to pray. I also remembered to follow up.

How are they doing? Did they recover from surgery? Did God answer that prayer?

I've noticed more answered prayers simply because I'm paying closer attention. Recording God's faithfulness strengthens my faith for the next challenge.

If you'd like to give this gift to someone you love, the Prayer Journal for Women Gift Set pairs the Two-Year Reflection Journal with a King James scripture pen — everything she needs to begin her own journey with the Lord. It makes a beautiful and meaningful gift for birthdays, Mother's Day, church anniversaries, or simply because.

Start Today

One of my favorite features of my journal is that it isn't tied to a calendar. It's open-dated. That means you can begin today. If life becomes busy and you miss a week — or even several months — you simply pick it back up and continue.

There is no guilt. There is no pressure. There is simply another opportunity to spend time with the Lord.

If you're struggling with anxiety today, my encouragement is simple.

Start today.

Open God's Word.

Write your first prayer.

Be honest with the Lord.

Tell Him exactly what is on your heart.

Prayer journaling hasn't removed every burden from my life. But it has taught me where every burden belongs.

Every page reminds me that God is faithful, His Word is alive, and I never have to carry life's worries alone.

If you've been wondering whether prayer journaling can really reduce anxiety, I hope my story encourages you to discover what I have found.

Peace doesn't come from the pages of a journal.

Peace comes from spending time with the God who meets us there.
